I took my daughter back to uni (midwifery degree so needed to be back for placement) 300 mile plus trip each way - was not stopped although would be legit if I had been. I would also stay overnight or longer....

We insure our own buildings - we do not insure anything the tenant brings into them and they must obtain his own insurance for loss and loss of profit. May be a bit unusual but saves a lot of headaches!

indeed. Once you are out you can decide whether to take legal action to recover anything unfairly deducted (if the amounts are worth the bother). Possibly better just to let it go. Worst case scenario he will present you with a bill saying the deposit doesn't cover the damage....
