    Tenancy Start Date

    Hi all,

    Hope everyone is keeping safe.

I just had a quick question in regards to tenancy start dates.

I am going to be renting an apartment by a private student accommodation firm in September.

I am hoping to move in on the 10th of September 2020 however on the contract it says from the 1st of September.

Will I be paying for that first week that I won't be there or does the rent start from the day I move in?

Sorry if this seems like a silly question, it's just my first time renting a space and living alone as I am 18 and I want to make sure I have everything correct.

    Thank you,

Rent starts from the day the contract says it does.

      Thank you.

Technically, the rent is due from the 1st because the contract says it is.
The tenancy only starts when you move in.

But that probably doesn't have any impact on you in real life.
It would only matter if you wanted to cancel (or, theoretically, die between the 1st and the 10th, so don't do that!)
When I post, I am expressing an opinion - feel free to disagree, I have been wrong before.
Please don't act on my suggestions without checking with a grown-up (ideally some kind of expert).

Have you yet paid any deposit? If so more than 1 week's rent please?
I am legally unqualified: If you need to rely on advice check it with a suitable authority - eg a solicitor specialising in landlord/tenant law...

Are you sure your College will be running the course in September?
