  • Fraudulent Energy Supplier

    I have a number of flats here in Reading with electric heating. So as to get an afternoon heating boost, I have had the Local electricity supplier change from Economy 7 to three rate 'Flexiheat' meters.

    Rate 1 records weekdays 0730-1930 consumption
    Rate 2 records all other times
    Rate 3 records storage and water heating.

    However, whenever a tenant moves in, and I give a meter reading, ******** E******c always try to cook the books to screw the most money possible from me.

    On Monday, I gave readings as follows (The meter was new in December):
    Rate 1: 00005
    Rate 2: 00012
    Rate 3: 01128

    Today I have my final bill as follows:
    Rate 1: 01128 units @ 19.77p per unit: £223.01
    Rate 2: 00005 units @ 9.38p per unit: £ 0.47
    Rate 3: 00012 units @ 6.1p per unit: £ 0.73

    The first couple of times this happened, I put it down to incompetence. However, I have now had it happen half a dozen times over the years, and it is beginning to look deliberate.

    Now, obviously I will be on the phone to change the bill on Monday, but how can I get them to stop 'trying it on'?

    Only report meter readings by email or snailmail. Or record your 'phone calls, wait for fraud then ask head of customer service if he'd like Police involved

      Thanks Artful. It comes to something when you have to record phone calls to utility providers.

        I have a property with storage heating. Supplier "mixed up" the high and low rate readings every time. They ended up paying back over £1,000 because of their "error". Had I not checked they would have got away with it too....

          Scottish Hydro (for my Scottish let properties.. part of Scottish 'n Southern..) s**w things up on such an extraordinarily regular basis that I now have my own, named&emailed, contact in the executive office to email when it goes wrong again...


          Who was it said "Quality is getting it right 1st time..." .. Sigh!

            Sorry if this has been asked before, and sorry for posting rather than waiting to see what happens !

            I have just had my gas appliances serviced, and safety inspection carried out (for a landlords gas safety certificate - CP12).

            There was a fault which the engineer classified...

            Not sure if anyone here can help as it relates to a housing association.

            my friend moved into a housing association property 2 years ago. Village has no gas and is all electricity with heating being provided by an air to electricity heat source pump and hot water heated by panels on roof....

            Small update. An electrician visited from housing association yesterday and witnessed what is happening. He had no training on the air source heat pump but verified that the cost Is off the scale and that the heat it is generating is not entering the house.

            He suspects as someone on here...

            I guess the Dad would have to know how to do the work to show the child in the first place. My friend is completely useless. I found a curtain track at the flat which I know he needs. He is incapable of putting it up without me supervising. I hope in due course his son will be able to supervise Dad....

            what I fail to understand is that we are supposed to be a nation of 'diy'ers. yet it seems that a lot of younger people cant even change a plug. don't their parents get them to do anything 'maintenance' wise ?...

            hiping you can help. I can't find anything on this particular issue.

            When the agent originally let one of my flats they orgnajsed a gas safety check of the boiler but not the gas cooker. I've since taken over managing the tenancy myself and have read that all gas appliances...

            I would take out the fridge, and put in the hall, then unscrew that wine rack. Then you might see what is stopping the cooker coming out. It might be floor leveling screed that is stopping its feet moving.

            You might even get away without trimming anything, as your oven doors seem to be...
