British Gas have failed the boiler on gas safety inspection

Boiler was inspected by BG who found inadequate flu support and failed the system. They have also cancelled my landlords contract with them.
The boiler was installed only 15 months ago by a local independent plumbing firm. Work guaranteed for 1 year.
I have got back to the plumbers but they are not answering and I’ll probably only get to speak to them on Monday.
Given that the system shows inadequate flu support can I argue that it was fitted incorrectly and get them to come and rectify it at no charge? I paid in excess of £4000 for this so I am rather disappointed. If they refuse my option then is to get back to British Gas and get them to quote for the work. Thanks for any advice.

If BG will only reinstate your cover if they do the work, then going with BG would see to be a good option, providing they quote for the work and guarantee in writing to reinstate the cover.

Given the nature of the fault, I think BG's cancellation of the cover is somewhat premature. You might check your contract to see if they are cancelling for a valid reasons. If not, complain.

Will BG reinstate the cover, if someone else fixes the issue? If so, I would not use BG, but find a local engineer who can come to sort the issue asap.

Ask original installers round to do gas safety check.

I have heard rumours, undoubtedly malicious, suggesting certain supplies are keen to fail ... Wonder why they might do that....
I am legally unqualified: If you need to rely on advice check it with a suitable authority - eg a solicitor specialising in landlord/tenant law...

erm... if your boiler was installed by someone who doesn't ride a horse and herd cows then they should have presented you with a gas safe cert at the end of the process.

BTW, you need a doctor for flu

Firstly I'd be getting a second opinion that the flue support is actually inadequate. I am assuming the people that installed the boiler did your initial Gas Safe Certificate? As something like that is unlikely to change

I generally stay away from BG regardless so it may not be a bad thing they've cancelled your contract. You can shop around now for a better deal

Thanks everyone. I have contacted the original plumbers but they were closed Saturday. I am going to ask them to come and check the system. They did issue a gas safety certificate when they installed the boiler. I feel they should do it for free as if there is a problem now, it was likely to be there when they installed. We’ll see.
If I get no joy from them I’ll contact another firm for a second opinion.

Just an update, original plumbers came round, did inspection, added some staples to the flu support and issued the safety certificate. All free of charge which was nice. Now I need to decide who to go with next year and who to get insurance with. Or sure whether to re instate BG or not.

“ not sure” whether to reinstate BG or not.

personally, after considering all the options, we decided that it was cheaper to self-insure boilers in our properties. BG seems ludicrously expensive to me.

Tatemono by self insure do you mean you put money aside regularly and use that if and when there is a problem with your boiler?

IME BG seem rather keener to fail boilers than smaller companies - and to suggest more expensive remedies when there is a problem.

Coincidentally, just had the gas safety certificate done by BG last week and whilst they issued a cert, they issued an advisory saying the flue needs sealing (even though what they have picked up on isn't affecting the boiler). The boiler was installed about 5 years ago, had a gas safety certificate done every year and by BG last 2 years without this being an issue. Nothing has changed. I put it down to an overzealous BG engineer (i.e. jobsworth), however after reading the above post, maybe BG have an agenda here...

Separately, for properties where there are singles or families in them, we also just call our local friendly gas engineer/plumber when necessary. In a flat where there are 3 sharers, we have the BG contract. Mainly because there's no excess on the policy for callouts, and there can be a few callouts....
