by BerlingogirlYes you can, but you need to give 6 months notice. I'd also start a money claim online (MCOL) by following the correct protocol.
I would also ask for any housing benefit or UC/HE to be paid direct to you....-

Mum was living by herself and was independent until she slipped over at the top of the stairs, didn't hurt herself but couldn't get up. I had to call the paramedics and they took her to the local hospital where she went down hill very rapidly....

Notice doesn't really take effect, it expires, but I can't imagine what else is meant by the wording.-
