My tenants made alterations and did damage, anyone else had this?

Presuming you have a signed inventory and can prove the damage, you are on a good footing, as by going to court, you can claim the whole 2000 quid, not just the bond.
    Now signature free.

      Dilapidations Claims

The Small Claims Court process is long winded and slow but if you follow the rules and put together a good evidence based case then it can be very effective even when you DIY.
In my experience it takes around 3 months to get to hearing - depending upon local workload on the court.
Legal costs are not allowed so unless there's a lot of money involved it's often not cost effective to use a solicitor.
The key to success is evidence, so as lorenzo says an inventory and preferrably photographic evidence as to the condition when the tenant went in would be ideal.
It does not necessarily follow though that no inventory no chance. You could get independent witness evidence from, say, the agents or others as to the state before and after.
You will need to get the repairs done professionally so you have invoice evidence of costs involved - you'll find it difficult to claim for DIY work.
