    Problem collecting possessions.

    Ok, short version of a long story...
    Moved into private property with my gf and her 2 kids, filled the house with nice possessions.
    We split after I find out she is seeing someone else. I move out with 6 months still left on the contract. All I take is a blu ray and speaker set.
    I make the landlord aware I have vacated the property but understand I am still liable for costs after her and the ex cant agree terms of a new contract/guarantor for whatever reason.

    There are 2 months to go and I have give LL written notice of our intention to full vacate the property by April 12th.

    So heres the problem... I want to enter the property to get the TV that matches the blu ray player and speakers I took months ago.
    I do not have a key and my ex is refusing me entry.
    I asked the LL for a key so I could go in when no one is in the house but she says she refuses to get involved in a domestic and wants me to source legal advice about going in...so still no key.
    I have made calls to CAB and had no return calls and its impossible to get through to SHELTER.
    I have been asking for this key for 3 weeks now.
    If I am liable for the rent/damages of the house and there are still 2 months left on the tenancy surely she has to provide me with a key to enter the property once when no one is home?

    Allow tenants to protect their own deposits. I want free money when they do it wrong

      Yes, heard getting through to Shelter can be hard. They are but a charity & the country & housing is in such a mesd. Try again, be patient, it's udually free (website explains)

      I am legally unqualified: If you need to rely on advice check it with a suitable authority - eg a solicitor specialising in landlord/tenant law...

          If your ex changed the locks, then I think your argument is with her.

          If the landlord changed the locks I think you could reasonably say you are not prepared to pay the rent unless you are provided with the new key.

          Perhaps either way, you should tell your ex & the LL that your continued contribution to the rent is dependent on you gaining access - even if just to collect some possessions.

          Or how about asking the LL to negotiate a time that you can enter when your ex is not around.

            There are a number (of the order of 20) of grounds under which possession can be sought. See the Housing Act 1988.



            The claim is for the period for which they were paying rent whilst there was no required licence in place, up to a maximum of 12 months. Getting a licence ends...
