    The OP doesn't have to prove anything about the bed.
    The lodger needs to prove it's his.
    Allow tenants to protect their own deposits. I want free money when they do it wrong

      The ex-lodger, as we know, is devious.
      He only has to write his own receipt, or one of his mates, to say.
      Receve the sum of £ 20 for one secondhand bed, dated the day
      he moved in, saying why would I buy a bed on the move in day, if
      one was supplied.
      So if O.P. does not take proof by his own receipt, or have
      the testimony of other lodgers, what conclusion will a judge come to.

      Always best to have proof the bed was already there !
