    Data protection act with old tenant details

    How do we correctly dispose of all old tenants details, such as old contracts and housing benefits information such as passport scans etc

    We've found quite a lot of old info through a clear out, would it be best to shred it? or is there regulations we would have to follow?

    Some mentioned before that after 6months your no longer allowed to shred it.

    Don't know about the six month thing.

    I would however have thought it prudent to keep paperwork for 6 years as this is the length of time you could be potentially sued by previous T.
    I'm a good tenant with great landlords
    I'm also a living, breathing, fully cooked female.

      Yeah: I always keep old contracts etc etc in case (say) council or utility suddenly demand council-tax/leccy-bill for 4 years ago.

      I'm sure as long as one is registered with whoever it is that is permitted..

      Anyone know of any small-time landlords who ARE registered?? (I'm not..)
      I am legally unqualified: If you need to rely on advice check it with a suitable authority - eg a solicitor specialising in landlord/tenant law...

        Just dispose of them however you choose.
        I would try and keep them for at least 6 years.
        Allow tenants to protect their own deposits. I want free money when they do it wrong
