I'm concerned that he's not going to let it go and the situation is becoming a bit intimidating.
Look! Your landlord has no grounds for asking you for anything and as he did not follow lawful procedure concerning the repossession of the premises he's flying a kite. He won't go to court if he takes some sensible advice from his solicitor as he will lose.
The advice I give should not be construed as a definitive answer, and is without prejudice or liability. You are advised to consult a specialist solicitor or other person of equal legal standing.

I don't think your x LL got a case, who to say it's the same washing machine, or some work man used it to wash their clothes. Tell him to go away and give him no money, he should have checked it when you moved out.

The LL may not have done it the right way, but nothing in the post have suggested anything illegal. LL ask them you move out in 6 weeks, you agreed and surrendered the P. You didn't need to do it, but you did it.
Unless he suggested he was going to force you to move out.
Disclaimer: What I say is either right or wrong. It may be advisable to check what I say with a solicitor. If he says I am right then I am right, unless he is wrong in which case I am wrong; but if he says I am wrong then I am wrong, unless he is wrong in which case I am right
