- Do you own and live in the house with the extension?
- Is this a self-contained flat with its applicable council tax and utility bills? Or are the bills in the landlord's name for the property as a whole?
- Do the occupants share a kitchen or bathroom with the landlord?
If it turns out that this person is merely a lodger, then you can probably make him leave with a relatively short notice period. If it turns out that this person is a tenant, then you'll need a court order to evict.
