Government handouts to tenants or landlords

Here is another bit of pending legislation/government spittle that has been ill thought through.

My kid has a tenancy which includes Council Tax and Energy as part of the rent. Her rent has gone up a lot as a result of increased cost of these inclusions.

Now after the fact the Chancellor grabs money and doles it out - first £150 back via Council tax, now £400 supposedly as a proposed energy bills rebate.
So who gets this cash? The landlord who is ultimately not paying for the energy or Council tax -- or the tenant?

Oh and a third of the population will get an extra £1000 or so of a free gift. Very nice, but what of all those who get left out and are far poorer than this third.

Whom ever has the account/contract with the engery company gets the windfall..... so it looks like the landlord is quids in, harsh i know but that is how the cookie crumbles, its not fair but nor are a lot of things in life.

Not every individuals set of circumstances can be seen or actioned, the govt maybe out of their depth at the moment but i fail to see how any govt of any time period could hand out more cash.

Just taking back a property (selling, nothing to do with legislation or tax), looks like I'll get the bung for that place. Bonkers.

The mistake your daughter made was to choose an inclusive package. This is a very poor set-up as it allows tenants to waste energy-they have no incentive to reduce their consumption.The landlord bears all the risk and therefore deserves all the gains.

Totally agree. I'll get 2 or 3 grand from this. Don't want it, don't need it. I grow my own logs FFS!

Swings and roundabouts though Art. I give you a dozen bottles of decent scotch every year (winter fuel allowance) and a chauffeur to drive you around while you quaff it (free bus pass).

No need to vote Labour, this government is implementing all their policies. More of a problem if you want Conservative policies as there isn't anyone to vote for.

When the account is closed, any credit is returned to the customer. (Just been dealing with the account of an ex tenant who had been over paying estimated bills.)

You can also get credit that has built up in an account refunded whilst the account remains active.

Tell your kid that with no CT liablity they should apply to the council for the extra £150 as a 'Local energy discretionary' payout.

The councils have been given money to give to people in this situation, HMO's etc.
Have a look on their council website for how they are running their discretionary scheme.

The landlord of a HMO will not get the £150 for the HMO council tax bill.
He'll only get it for his own home/CT bill. (I'm not sure how that's supposed to work with a live in landlord in a HMO?)

The £400 for electricty gets credited straight to the bill, so whoevers name is on the bill gets it.
Theoretically if it puts you in credit then you could draw it, but expect the companies to make it awkward to do that, and you'd still have to bay the bill later anyway.

The other payments announced are linked to benefits and pensions, so go direct to the person involved.

My daughter will be in a student house in the autumn. The account holder should benefit, but if they are not an account holder for pay back she will be ok.

I am happy for it to be put on as a credit on my account, i have been on a cheap fixed rate for a year now and have another year to go, god help me when it comes to an end, so i am building up my credit while i can, if people take it out and spend it on essentials like Cannabis and Rizzla's they deserve everything that will hit them next year.

My fixed rate has just ended and I've now gone onto standard rate (the new fixed rates being offered are ridiculous;y high).

I've not got the new DD amounts yet but from my own calcs the Gas will go up by 80%, however with this £400 (and I should also get the Warm Home Discount again, although they have changed the qualification rules this year) I calculate that my DD for electricity should go down by about 5%.

It's unlikely that the companies will let anyone draw out any of the £400, there may even be legislation put in place to stop that happening.

However my £150 from the council is already earmarked towards a new phone.
Not as wasteful as it might first sound; I'm going to need a new phone anyway when 3G gets switched off next spring and my 8 year old phone becomes defunct. (Well it will still work on 2G for another few years, but only for calls/texts).
So a new 4G/5G phone with a PAYG data plan, then USB tether through the phone or use it as a mobile hotspot and ditch the landline braodband saving that monthly bill,
(I dont need a 150mbps, unlimited data, landline. I suspect many people are paying for much more than they need and paying it twice, once on a landline then again on their mobile - of course if you have a family that's different).
I was doing it that way during lockdown when I had no wifi so I know that it will work.
Over a couple of years that's going to save me much more than the £150, and I get a shiny new phone.
