Buying a sofa for rental property to replace the old sofa

Ive found a cheap but nice sofa from Facebook Marketplace to replace the old knackered sofa in the rental property. Can I claim this as an expense? If so, do I need to get a receipt from the person Im buying from?

I picked the sofa up last night, and it has the fire retardant labels. (Its DFS sofa they bought new about 3 years ago).

I didnt get a receipt, although I could msg her on facebook today and ask her for one. I paid her via PayPal, could I use that as a receipt?

PayPal should suffice. Its highly unlikely that you're ever asked to submit receipts by HMRC anyways, unless you're a big shot or you have some dodgy dealings.

This is an extension of my original question: I now need to buy a replacement table. As it happens, my mum is selling one. If I pay her using my credit card (or debit card) will HMRC accept that as proof of purchase?

How would you prove price was expected market price? Being a relative (no offence to mum) would make HMRC more suspicious.

I almost always buy new.

Same comment as before: get a written receipt and male sire the price is reasonable. HMRC is unlikely to ever request receipts anyways but this should more than cover you. No reason not to use relatives, many people do it where wife is landlord smd husband is handyman doing work and repairs.

I was once asked by HMRC to send all my stuff, then they said I didn't have to - after I'd sent it. Grrrrrrrrr.
