Yes jpkeates 'figs and troughs' and all that, but early 20th century usage developed it into having racist overtones and I guess how racist you feel it is may well depend upon the colour of your skin.

It's certainly not my intention to try and tell anyone how they should feel.

It's not an expression I'd use personally.

These days many would see the phrase as a racial slur, and it can certainly be voiced in circumstances where it would be heard/seen/used in a racist manner (I'm sure members can work out how..).

Me, I call it a bleedin' shovel....
I am legally unqualified: If you need to rely on advice check it with a suitable authority - eg a solicitor specialising in landlord/tenant law...

When it comes to the implements, they're completely different things.
One digs and the other carries.
You don't dig with a shovel.

Is it also racist to call a three pronged instrument a spade, in the honest held belief it is a spade?

Surely 5 pronged, as in Street v Mountford on an agreement being a tenancy or a license?

Was it 5 not 3? It's been a while since I had my law course... And also a while since I last had a garden fork in my hand. But I guess 3 prongs might make digging a bit difficult so I give you that

I'm afraid that 'calling a spade a spade' is a racist term and offensive.
Not to me it isn't - if YOU think of it that way then I guess that's how your mind works.

As you have bought up the subject of Racism...........

Its a bit like the two new magazines CocoaGirl and CocoaBoy - which are aimed at and only feature black kids.

Imagine how two magazines called WhiteGirl and WhiteBoy and aimed only at white kids would be welcomed.

I won't use the term racism - I much prefer to see different races as different people and not colours.

Except some tenants, they aren't people, they're scum.

Part of the problem is that pretty much every magazine is for (and features) white kids.

The only way to erode racism is to positively address and oppose it.

Surely you don't learn from something or educate people by doing exactly the same thing yourself.

                        It's not the same thing.

Buying up every publication available and featuring predominantly BAME people with the odd white face as a novelty would be the same thing.
Representation is a huge issue for minorities, which members of an established majority often don't "get" because its never been an issue for them.

Equal Representation YES - but magazines for black kids which only feature black kids does not help at all.

Probably best that we move on with a difference of opinion (unless mods can split into the side forum, in which Im happy to discuss all day).

                            Agree.

Maybe therein lies the problem, because different races certainly don't necessarily mean different people.
