    Smart Meter Installation Fail

    Hello all,

    Looking for some advice as I am probably being stupid and I can't seem to find the answer myself;

    I am going to be renting my flat out, however my Energy supplier royally mucked up installing my smart meters back in June and as it stands I have no way of submitting meter readings. They can't get the meters to 'go live' or even pick up a signal, for some reason best known to themselves they can't even get them to work as a standard meter.

    They're telling me it's not a problem and I can still rent the flat out without having working meters. I am telling them this isn't the case but can't find anything to backup my argument.

    By smart meter, do you mean the complete package, including the mobile phone and house network modules, and the display unit, or just the device that actually does the measuring. It should still be possible to read the number of units on the basic measuring devices, although you may have to push buttons to do so.

      Just the device that does the measuring. When it was connected the engineer couldn't even activate the LCD screen and thinks the meter itself maybe faulty. Have attempted multiple button pushes and followed their step-by-step guide.

        Telephone the utilities supplier who fitted the smart meter and demand they come out and fix it or change it back to previous meter type.

          As long as you can read the meter, you'll be fine.
          Smart meters are a nice to have and not an essential feature of a rental property.
          When I post, I am expressing an opinion - feel free to disagree, I have been wrong before.
          Please don't act on my suggestions without checking with a grown-up (ideally some kind of expert).

            And what if the meter is faulty and giving duff meter reading out, It wont be fine.

            From what the OP posted the meter is faulty and needs further investigation by the utilities supplier.

              Just don't leave it in the property when it's let.

              The tenant might want a different utility supplier anyway.

                It is still not clear (to me) if it is the meters themselves that are not providing readings on their displays or if it is the "in-home display" unit that is not providing any information.

                    Many thanks for the replies. To clarify it is the Meters themselves not the Home display.

                    I have been trying since June to get the Energy company to come back and replace the meters, each time they either fail to turn up or turn up without the parts as they haven't read the job notes properly. I've got a complaint in which I can escalate to the Ombudsman in two weeks.

                      If it is impossible to read the meter, then it is not suitable for a tenant, UNLESS the energy company is saying in writing that there will be no energy charges until it is fixed.

                        Thank you. Oddly enough they only seem to want to deal with it on the phone and not in writing despite my requests. Once the issue is resolved I am going to request the call logs.

                        Thanks again for everyone's help, it confirmed what I expected but helped me feel reassured!
