    plastic or metal baths?

I'm about to refit a bathroom and would like recommendations for either a metal or plastic bath?

that depends on what shape or style. if it just a basic bath I would look at a steel bath, if it needs to be shaped (L or P for a shower) then an acrylic bath - but make sure its more than 6mm thick ! 8mm are good but 10mm sometimes only has 2 mm of colour - handy to have a good depth of colour for repairing scratches, gouges, chips etc
you can 'beef' up the structure of the bath underneath using timber to support the bath instead of relying on the frame of a cheap bath

The downside of the metal bath is if the enamel chips - and with tenants that is always a possibility.

I agree with Mr B - a good quality, at least 8mm thick plastic bath is ideal. In fact the thicker you can get the better IMO as tenants don't seem to be getting any lighter these days.
