Cheapest way to repair hob no longer under guarantee

Just had the dreaded call form tenant advising me a ring on the hob no longer works. Sod’s law applying fully, it’s 18 months old and Indesit’s guarantee is only for 1 year. How is the best way to get this sorted- call out a local plumber/ appliance repair person? Indesit are not answering but I remember seeing they want £139 labour and I guess there will be parts too. So pretty much the price of a new appliance. Any advice welcome!

18 months use only is unreasonable so I would be going back to the shop asking for them to foot the repair bill.

Call out a local repair man & if he can't fix it get hime to supply & fit a new one - usually some cost saving if he does both the repair &/or the replacement.

Unless it's something obviously simple I just replace them, unless it's an expensive one it's usually cheaper to replace it.

I had an old cooker found in a repo house I bought: Empty for 2 years, complete with fossilised sausage under grill over pan with mouldy fat.. 2 bust rings. (And car in garage.. long story..)

Bought 2 new rings/controls (can't remember which, about £45) and a new grill pan, used by me or tenants for some 5 years. Try somewhere like this, you might get lucky...

Sorry guys, it’s gas ( obvious to me but no one else). I’ll have a look at espares theartfullodger . I think I’ll need to go to the property. I’m hoping it might be a blockage around the ignition ie gunned up food, but that’s probably overly optimistic.

theartfullodger Great website I have saved it to my favourites. Only possible issue is it doesn’t give dimensions eg of the burner cover, ( the oven has 3 medium and one large burner) but I’m sure that’s not insuperable.

I tell tenant to wait until two rings go, then replace whole thing. (Who ever uses all four at once?)

Just come back from the property, and probably to the surprise of no one on here, the burner rings and the little gaps on the metal plinths were encased in congealed fat. Once I’d scrubbed the rings clean and unblocked all the little gaps ( I used an interdental brush) the cooker worked absolutely fine.

I think I'd tell my tenant to clean his own cooker.

Though saying that, my friend's ceramic hob is caked in grease as he's too tight to buy anything to clean it. He reckons the landlord should supply it!

I have emailed them asking them to make sure to clean it regularly or this will happen again.

If it's a gas hob, make sure you get it checked by as Gas safe engineer.

Thanks Ash, it’s been added to my BG landlord insurance and got checked last month.
