Great story on how heat pumps lower your EPC:

Thats why we need a referendun on net zero. I am currently watching philip davies on farage on gbnews and they make the same point!

      Seriously?

You REALLY think that the public should decide whether or not the UK should be aiming to be net zero for carbon emissions as soon as reasonably possible?

What should be don't is way that EPC scores are calculated should be completely overhauled (alongside serious reconsideration of taxation, etc., for all forms of transport - including putting tax back on short haul flights).

Climate Change is a serious issue. We all have a responsibility.

I am such a referendum would succeed and most people would think it is someone else's problem. Someone else must reduce their emission.

I present Exhibit A: Bill Gates who flies 200,000 miles a year has written a book about it and the points to a barefooted natives in a developing nation, they reduce their carbon footprint.

Yes, this is precisely what we are currently seeing, with people in most developed countries (those with huge historic 'carbon footprints' and, in many cases, currently with among the highest per-capita emissions in the world) refusing to accept that their behaviour may need to change and instead pointing to developing countries and claiming that's where the problem is.

Not sure how I managed to mangle the above sentence quite so badly but, for avoidance of any doubt, it should say the following:
What should be done is that the way that EPC scores are calculated should be completely overhauled.

EPCs put far, far too much emphasis on how much energy bills will cost the people who live in a property. This is not necessarily directly closely correlated to how much energy use could be reduced, or how polluting the energy used is.
There are also too many properties that are scored down because of assumptions that are made. For example, it is usually assumed that flat roofed buildings are poorly insulated.

              Absolutely agree

When EPCs first came along there were two scores: the EPC we use today & the one measuring the amount of CO2 produced

If EPCs are to be used to reduce climate change then surely we should be using the second measure? Instead, we use the measure that includes costs and end up with the ridiculous situation that gas guzzling houses have a better EPC than those with electric heating (inc heat pumps) fuelled by green electricity!
