  • Adverse Possession when - the council is the lender

I am considering taking possession of a property that has been vacant for around 20 years. The house is generally in a run down condition has been boarded up. The back and front gardens are overgrown.

My question is can I go ahead and if so what action can the council take regarding their charge. They are listed as the lender on the Land Registry title register under section 22 of the Health and Social Services and Social Security Act 1983.

I am aware that any mortgage debt from a private company would either be written off or reduced but what about the council.
